Mossbourne Rowing Academy
Over 100 pupils from across the Mossbourne Federation schools in Hackney take part in regular rowing activity, working in partnership with LYR.
Rowing at Mossbourne is delivered by a full time rowing coach, Tom Wilkinson, who joined the programme in September 2020. Tom represented Great Britain at 8 World Championships in both Sculling and Sweep disciplines. He is assisted by a wide variety of members of staff from across the Mossbourne Federation and two assistant rowing coaches provided by London Youth Rowing.
Rowing is an important part of the culture of the Mossbourne Federation. The Rowing Academy offers talented sports pupils the opportunity of transition from their current school to Mossbourne Community Academy at the start of the Year 9 if they demonstrate an exceptional aptitude for the sport of rowing and they wish to pursue this path.
One of the athletes from the programme, Robine van Doorn, secured a full scholarship to Tulsa University in the United States based on the strength of her rowing. She will be taking up the scholarship in January 2021. Robine has been supporting the programme in the meantime as a part time coach.
You can hear from Robine on positive impact the programme has had on her.
Sascha Nyamukuta is one of the athletes in the squad currently in Year 10. Sascha shares her thoughts on the Mossbourne programme and her hopes for the 2021 season.
